Ep. 74 - Like A Sturgeon

It’s hard to believe, but we’re doing another episode on fish! This time around, Steve introduces us to the Sturgeon (family Acipenseridae), from their dinosaur-era origins to their caviar-fueled scandals (did you know Beluga caviar comes from Sturgeon? Bill didn’t either). So strap in as the guys touch on Sturgeon, for the very first time.

This episode was recorded on June 29, 2025 at Eighteenmile Creek County Park in Hamburg, NY.

Episode Notes and Links

Bill misspoke about the origin of the name Eighteen Mile Creek. Friend of the podcast and naturalist Jon Roth reminded him that there are actually two creeks by that name in Western NY. In this episode, Bill and Steve were at the Eighteen Mile Creek in Erie County, which empties into Lake Erie eighteen miles from the start of the Niagara River in Buffalo. The creek Bill referenced, however, is a different Eighteen Mile Creek in northern Erie County, named because its mouth on Lake Ontario lies eighteen miles from the mouth of the Niagara River.
